In 1999, Paul Whatmore who is a Mortgage Broker in Southern Ontario discovered that he, "had a problem". Paul gave Rich Spence a call and said 'I have a problem and you need to fix it'". Paul's problem was that he had a database of clients that he wanted to market to, but there was no integrated software solution to access his database. Paul wanted to stay in contact with his clients, referral sources and prospects for his local Mortgage Brokerage business. Rich Spence, being the solution oriented person he is, and knowing nothing of how the mortgage industry worked, suggested Paul go buy ACT! This required Paul to retype his client's information into Act before he could execute his marketing plans. Paul suggested that Rich come down to his office to learn how he does business and to see why a non-integrated, off the shelf software might not work for mortgage brokers. As the picture became clearer, Paul and Rich collaborated and developed a custom CRM application for Paul's office. Soon after they went to market, and inContact was born.
